PYT is an excellent opportunity for young people aged 11-21 to work with highly skilled adults to put on a major show, enjoy being part of a community, and raise money for a worthy cause.

It is the aim of all at St. Swithun's to provide, through PYT, an opportunity for people to work together for a good cause, bring about some community spirit and give young people a positive experience of church life.  Our aim is not to convert anyone, or make people come on a Sunday morning, but simply to give young people a positive experience of being inside a church whilst developing their talent too.

There's a big need for more community-based activities in Purley and the surrounding area, and there's not enough theatre for young people to get involved in.  St. Swithun's is very pleased that PYT seems to have come about very naturally because of these factors.  Our original intention was put on a massively ambitious show to raise an incredibly large sum of money for a thoroughly deserving cause in Sri Lanka that St. Swithun's was linked to.  We advertised for a cast to perform Les Mis, and they came with enthusiasm and excitement.  And then wanted more - demand and desire is such that we're going to keep on going!

So in July 2006 we staged Jesus Christ Superstar with Mike Millsted as Director and David Starbuck as Musical Director and Producer.  Yet again we staged another massively ambitious show and raised nearly £5800, this time for White Orange Youth, an AIDS awareness charity.  Last year 3.5 million people died of AIDS worldwide, that's nearly 10,000 people a day.  Imagine if you heard that on the news today: 10,000 people died today from a mysterious condition.  You'd be shocked.  People donated generously, and it's PYT philosophy to be of big help to the small, localised, charity.

In 2007 David takes the directing helm to bring We Will Rock You to life at St. Swithun's. Make sure you get involved!  If you are interested in helping in any way you can - whether it be production, orchestra, stage-hands, or odd-jobs, then email David.
